On May, 5, 2006, I ended my 4.5 years of under-grad by I walking. I earned my Bacholar of Fine Arts in Visual Communications, and though I may have started out in information systems I found my true calling in Graphic Design. It feels good. 12:40:10 am, Categories: News, 2 comments STATE HEALTH IS A BOTHER 04/24/06 Today was the first day of the Utah State health department wall painting. My Advanced Graphic design class has been tricked into doing sweat labor for the state by painting wall murals in their stairwells. To say the least it's slave labor and I have to say graphic design with a brush really sucks. 11:26:28 pm, Categories: News, Leave a comment --> THIRTY-FIVE PERCENT After undergoing a second redesign marcfolio.com is about 35 percent complete as of today. There are still little minor tweeks that need to be made to the portfolio section, BUT it is working. I think this weekend will mark the completion of the site. Sweet Rice This project originated as a CD booklet for a mix of my personal favorite songs. From there it evolved into a more functional piece serving as both a CD booklet and custom CD case. The CD mounts in the center panel (rice growing image) on a plastic CD hub holder. The China Post The objective of this project was to redesign The China Post (a daily newspaper that targets expatriates living abroad in Taiwan and China) to better reflect its audience. Cool Yule This is one of my very first flash projects and I want to show case it because it never got sent to anyone. So rather than looking at this piece as a design masterpiece just enjoy. Poetry by Shel Silverstein By using type to illustrate simple childhood poems written by Shel Silverstein I designed these three squares. Though each poem is unique I wanted to maintain a cohesiveness between them. Book Design For this assignment I was given a few stock photographs and the challenge to create a story and book design revolving around the images. MRT Map information map My map self-portrait is a map or information graphic of my life and personal history. This piece was part of the “Sticks and Stones” 2005 project which involved the graphic design students from The University of Birmingham, alabamagraphic, and Weber State University, Utah. The project was designed to confront labels/ stereotypes and address how we as designers can make a difference by promote tolerance and being more aware of stereotypes. The two schools exchanged map portraits and labeled them according to the content and the overall design conveyed. My portrait received labels such as; asian fascination, anal, mormon, and family orientated. Asiapear.com My first personal website used to spread news, post pictures, and showcase videos I had shot. I no longer use the site but it can still be viewed. Alabama information graphic My objective with this project was to make an information graphic about alabama's economics, and humanize the data with an article that personalizes alabama's economic problems by showing the effects that the economic down turn has had on a few alabamans. Utah State Health Department In an effort to encourage employees to exercise more and take the stairs the Utah State Health Department asked the Weber State Advanced Graphic Design students to design murals (6'x10') that would be painted on the landing of each flour in the stairwell. The class submitted twelve designs and along with three others mine was picked. Unfortunately due to lack of resources and time it was never executed. Sam Smith Orthodontics With this site I wanted to create a brand image for Sam Smith Orthodontics that was fun and exciting, and at the same time very professional. The site was created in flash for its transitions and interactive aspects. The client also wanted an area of the site that could easily be updated; for this I used blogging software as the online interface. As a new blog post is created the flash website reflects the new post. Christmas 2005 Letterpress personal holiday card sent to friends and family. Hand cranked on a Vandercook Proof press. Weather web site. Yahoo weather driven xml Simple, enter your desired zip code hit return and watch as your present, daily, and tomorrow forecast appear before your eyes; along with video of the weather conditions or activities that would be appropriate for that specific condition. Difficult, behind the scenes “The Weather Project” takes the users zip code and request the correct RSS feed from Yahoo Weather Service. From this xml data the site begins to configure. Everything is dynamic and reflects the information returned from Yahoo including the background image. Another element added is the video. The video is interactive and runs in short (almost seamless) loops awaiting the user's click to advance to the next loop. Technologies used to make all this magic happen are flash, html, css, javascript, and a little php. Krispy Kream Ad Description: In this ad for Krispy Kreme Donuts I wanted to play off the negative and fearful aspects a person feels when he or she steps onto a scale. By creating a scale in which the numeric dial has been replaced by one that has no measurement system—only negative labels that we associate with being fat—this ad ask the question “what is a few more?” Current History of marc garner This map portrait is part of the “Sticks and Stones” 2006 project.
